The town’s name is written first in the “Llibre de Repartiment” (1248-1249). Most often as “Ayel-lo”, but also as “Yelo”. In later documents of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries we find the names “Ayel-lo”, “Ayelu”, “Yel-lo”.
In 1563 the chronicler Martí de Viciana is the first to use the compound form “Ayelo de Malferit” which reappears as the official name in the Gazetteer of Miñano in 1826.
In 1935, in the project of linguistic normalization of the municipalities of Valencian language, the official name using “Aielo de Malferit” was proposed.
From 1939 the name “Ayelo de Malferit” continued to be used.
In 1988 the official name of “Aielo de Malferit” was definitively adopted following a decree of the Valencian Government of March 21, 1988, published in the Official Gazette of August 16.
